The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) displays its Australian collection of artworks at the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, in Federation Square.
The country's first public art museum dedicated to Australian art, the centre has a collection numbering almost 25,000 works, including paintings, sculpture, prints, photography, fashion and textiles.
The Ian Potter Centre presents the story of Australian art through a comprehensive program of temporary exhibitions and extensive displays. The collection reads like a potted history of early Australian art, and includes some of the genre's most iconic paintings, including Frederick McCubbin's poignant triptych 'The Pioneer', Tom Roberts' 'Shearing the Rams' and works by Arthur Streeton, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Albert Tucker, Margaret Preston, Fred Williams, John Perceval and Howard Arkley.
The collection also acknowledges the power, primacy and cultural diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, and represents some of Indigenous art's major historical and contemporary works. The collection includes works in a range of media by male and female artists, including Barak, Judy Watson, Emily Kngwarray and Uta Uta Tjangala.
